What is a recall?

Recalls are issued when a part or system in a vehicle is identified as faulty. Whether it’s a unique part of your model or a generic part that is used across brands, a recall means that the part is unsafe or malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.

If a recall is issued, the manufacturer will contact authorized dealers and registered owners. To make sure you get this notice, check that you’re registered with the manufacturer and that your state car registration is up to date. If you bought a new car, you should have been automatically registered, but if you bought a used vehicle, you may need to register with the manufacturer so they know you’re the owner. You can do this on the manufacturer’s website.

What is the NHTSA?

The NHTSA, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is the government agency that regulates vehicle safety standards. This agency provides crash test ratings for vehicles across all brands, makes and models. They also work to save lives and prevent costly accidents through education, research, standards and enforcement. You can check their website to find safety information on different vehicles, tires, and even car seats for children.

How do I know if the used vehicle that I'm interested in has a safety recall?

You can use the recall search tool on the NHTSA website to see if your vehicle has any open recalls. Simply type in your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or your year, make and model. Audi, along with many other car manufacturers, also provides the ability to search for recalls on their site. In addition, we provide a free copy of the CARFAX® Vehicle History Report™, which contains recall information, with every Audi Certified Pre-Owned vehicle we sell.

How will I find out if my vehicle is subject to a safety recall after I purchase it?

Audi will contact you with the recall notice by phone, email or first-class mail. The report will contain the recalled part’s risk to your safety and next steps you should take.
