The Qvale Auto Group History in Florida

Seventy-four years is a long time. It might be strange to think of the Qvale Auto Group starting from nothing since it has reached so many cities present day, but Norwegian-born Kjell Qvale established the now 15-dealership auto group way back in 1947. Qvale was one of the pioneers in importing foreign cars to the United States, transporting high-end brands like Rolls-Royce, Porsche, Aston Martin, Audi, Lotus, Jaguar, De Tomaso, Land Rover, Volkswagen and Maserati — plus let’s not forget the iconic MG sports cars — to California. His quick hand and smart innovations in the industry gave him his start.

Now, our teams across the great state of Florida can look back on the history of the Qvale Auto Group with a sense of pride; how the group started has largely influenced how we operate today. Our founder is quoted as saying: “We are a team committed to providing value, quality and excellence in sales and service; inspired by our customers' standards and the Qvale family reputation for integrity since 1947.” Curious to learn more about the Qvale Auto Group? A Brief History

Once branded as a successful businessman in manufacturing, distributing and retailing European automotive brands, it was just the start for Kjell Qvale.

In 1949, Qvale made his move to San Francisco and officially started operating as British Motor Car Distributors, Ltd.

In 1950, Qvale was named chairman of the first Concours D'Elegance at Del Monte Lodge, Pebble Beach. Today, the Concours is said to be the premier celebration of the automobile.

In 1970, Qvale bought Jensen Motors in West Bromwich, UK. The company manufactured 12,000 Jensen Interceptors and Jensen Healy cars.

In 2000, the Qvale Auto Group had made a legacy for itself in cutting-edge design, and so began production of the new Mangusta in Modena, Italy. QAG later sold the rights to the Mangusta to Britain's MG Rover Group. The launch of MG Rover Group's flagship model, the MG XPower SV, was based on the Qvale Mangusta, featuring its structure, suspension, engine and gearbox.

In 2013, after almost 70 years in the automotive industry, Kjell Qvale passed away, survived by his two sons, Bruce and Jeff.
